The festival has been told it can sell 911 tickets for each performance.

It is hoping for a further relaxation before the curtain rises at end-July.

Bayreuth Mayor Thomas Ebersberger said: ‘We have requested a minimum number of 911 visitors from the Ministry…. On Wednesday at 7:50 am I received a message that our arguments had convinced.’

If the festival direction had used the absence of performances in 2020 as an opportunity to install climate control in the sweatbox hellhole of a Festspielhaus, in an era of climate change, and ever more frequent 35C temperatures, they wouldn’t be faced with this problem now.

They installed climate control in 1995, Was is not working in recent years?
