The Malko Competition has maintained perfect gender equality in its final round, assuring us that this outcome is a complete coincidence.

The finalists are:

Katharina Wincor, Austria
Dmitry Matvienko, Belarus
Joel Sandelson, England
Anton Holmer, Sweden
Chloé Dufresne, France
Linhan Cui, China

Sandelson is also a finalist in the concurrent Rotterdam Conducting Comeptition.

This is very good training for a conductor, being with two orchestras at the same time.

Sandelson (pictured) is Conducting Fellow at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and assistant conductor at BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

But only 1 is from Asia, none from Americas, Africa, Oz. This looks like discrimination ! How many are left handed ? What blood groups ? And let me guess, all have had an elite musical education. Why the lack of diversity of backgrounds ?
(For the avoidance of doubt, this is sarcastic).

    Semi-finals (Round 3), not finals.

  • Alexander Hall says:

At least Julio Garcia Vico withdrew from the Malko after winning the Donatella Flick. Not everybody has a gargantuan appetite.

  • mary says:

I’m sick and tired of affirmative action for men. If men can’t hack it on the podium, they should stay home and watch their sports programs or whatever the do all day long in their man cave.

    • Freewheeler says:

Yeah, I was getting tired of listening to Alcyone, I’m getting back to the ice hockey! Thanks for the encouragement.

  • Maestra says:

A woman is going to win it this year. I predict Chloe Dufresne.

    • Don Juan says:

You couldn’t be more wrong in your life. The victor is Dmitry Matvienko. Don’t quit your day job, Nostradamus.

  • Mike Hedders says:

Good Lord, seems that a fair few old codgers have a real problem with the emergence of female conductors these days….

  • Christian says:

The guy from Belarus will win. It was clear from his first upbeat in the first round – he’s on a completely different level than all the other candidates.

  • Brian Stobbs says:

As a black person and a lover of classical music I am disappointed with the lack of blacks in classical music world wide.
In a climate where we are assured that everyone is fighting for equality I am wondering when it’s going to start happening.lots of words but no real action.
