Bavarian State Opera is putting on the first act from Die Walküre next Thursday, with or without audience depending on Covid rules at the time.

The performance is conducted by Asher Fisch and sung by Jonas Kaufmann, Lise Davidsen and Georg Zeppenfeld. It will be streamed for free on the company’s website.

Luxury casting, Covid style.

Kaufmann and Davidsen have sung Fidelio together in London, pre-Covid.

It’s actually on Thursday 13 May, & just Act 1.

  • Tom Hase says:

Stellar casting, indeed. So happy to be able to listen to two of the greatest Wagner singer of our times. Jonas Kaufmann is not bad either…

  • Faye says:

Seems you have to pay Euro 9.90 to watch it? As per this link

  • Faye says:

Actually – it seems you *can* watch it free on 13 May only but from 15 May you have to pay Euro 9.90…….

  • Waltraud Becker says:

    pre-Covid. ????????????
    No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kaufmann suffered from COVID during Fidelio!

  • Nik says:

“Kaufmann and Davidsen have sung Fidelio together in London, pre-Covid.”
Interesting use of “pre”, Norman. This was around the time the first wave was peaking in London.

  • Hugh Kerr says:

I was at the Garden the last night before it closed down for Covid and the last time they sung together. Davidsen was the star of the evening as Tony Pappano said “ I don’t know why people are getting excited about Kauffman he doesn’t even sing till the second act!” Actually he was pretty good but it was a modern conceptual production which didn’t do him or us any favours!

  • JS says:

Alle the cast was sick with COVID. First to said it publicly was Amanda Forsythe – Slipped Disc wrote about it https://slippedisc.com/2020/07/the-times-covent-garden-made-me-sing-with-covid/

  • Eusebius says:

Can’t we find a new Wagner tenor other than Kaufmann? I would prefer an Italian. Wagner should be sung like belcanto.

  • Ines says:

    He shouldn t.
When you see them together it s embarassing. She is very tall and he looks so little next to her.
Not speaking about voice but image.
He looks great next to Garanca. They both sounded and looked great in Parsifal

  • Nicholas Ennos says:

We are all in for a feast of terrible singing

  • Lewis Rosenthal says:

It was okay. Watch you tube complete performance from La Scala with Domingo, Meier and Muti. Outstanding.
