The composer’s heir has disclosed that, unable to afford the upkeep, he has sold Hans Werner Henze’s Roman villa “La Leprara” where the composer worked from 1966 to 2012.

Henze had hoped that it would be perpetuated as a retreat for young composers.

This is sad. I was privileged to visit there in 1989 and the villa and grounds have a marvellous atmosphere. Michael met me at the nearest station (Marino) and kindly drove me to La Leprara for a light (vegetarian) lunch with the Maestro. there were peacocks around. A lovely, special moment to treasure.

How is it that so often the heirs are not able to keep what they receive and have to sell it as soon as possible?

  • Alviano says:

Sad. Guess there wasn’t enough money in the estate or income to maintain it. Sad the German government backed out. They bought the Mann house in Pacific Palisades.

if they cannot afford the up keep there
    is no choice.

It’s a hot sellers market right now, I’m sure they got multiple offers and sold it $$$thousands over asking.
