The celebrated Graz soprano Maria Kouba, one of the leading Salomes of her day, has died at a great age.

Married to a Czech conductor Stefan Kouba, she made her debut in Graz in 1957 by jumping in at the last moment as Salome, a role that became her trademark worldwide, from Vienna to the Met.

She lived for some years in Canada with her second husband, a Germann orchestral musician.

  • Otto Krcal says:

Maria Kouba´s Salome can be seen in this 1960 Austrian TV production under the baton of Hans Swarowsky and with partners such as Hans Hotter and Julius Patzak.
