Riot Ensemble will perform Georg Friedrich Haas’s 75-minute Solstices in pitch-darkness at London’s King’s Place on June 11.

The work, performed from memory, requires a process of deep listening from musicians and audience. It is Riot Ensemble’s most ambitious commission to date, co-commissioned with partner festivals Dark Music Days, Reykjavik – where it was premiered in 2019 -, Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt and the Dutch November Music festival.

  • John Borstlap says:

It’s great fun for the players, because the outcome will always be a surprise and the notion of ‘wrong note’ or ‘mistake’ does not exist in such works.

For listeners who can’t have enough of the unsettling experiences of the modern world, this is ‘gefundenes Fressen’.
