Soloist hauls teacher out of 40-year retirement

The Berlin pianist Kirill Gerstein has persuaded his mentor Ferenc Rados to record a Mozart four-hand album, four decades after Rados retired from public performance.

Steven Isserlis says in the CD booklet: ‘Kirill should receive a medal for having survived the trials through which he was put before the present wonderful recording could come to fruition.’

Rados, 86, taught throughout his career at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest.

The release will be out in mid-May.

    Great story. Do we know the “trials” gone through before the recording which S.I. referred to ?

      I have always heard that Hungarian piano professors are notoriously strict and even intimidating during lessons and I wonder if Maestro Rados reverted to form during the sessions with “pupil” Gerstein?
