The 18th International Robert Schumann Competition for Piano and Voice in Zwickau has been cancelled for the second year running due to Covid. It is the main musical event in Zwickau, the composer’s birthplace.

More than 130 young musicians from 32 countries were due to take part.

Good! In Zwickau, it seems, there is some common sense.

  • fflambeau says:

Maybe there was a good reason for this, like Covid?

2020 was not a ‘normal’ year, 2021 will continue to not be a ‘normal’ year. Rather than hastily call the death knell for anything of cultural significance in Zwickau (and surely this is not the *only* event to take place there) it would be better to see the cancellations in context. Given time, I am sure they will be back. In the meantime, the Schumanns’ reputation remains to be celebrated by music lovers around the world.

Alas, my bet is that when they are NL will find another issue to find fault with, because let’s face it, you have a problem with competitions don’t you?

  • Barry Guerrero says:

Excuse folks, but there isn’t a rhetorical comment there of any type. Norman has simply stated the facts. You’re projecting.
