Those with long memories may recall the turbulent rule of the conductor Tiberiu Soare at Bucharest National Opera five years ago.

He started by sacking the ballet chief, the Danish choreographer Johan Kobborg and his wife, Romania’s most popular ballerina Alina Cojocaru. The resultant slip in the company – and the country – led to Soare’s demission soon after.

Guess what?

Soare has just been appointed artistic director at Bucharest National Opera.

Sadly, not a surprise. Cristian Mandeal was offered the role several years ago, it’s a pity he didn’t accept the position.
