The worst kept podium secret has just been confirmed.

Gustavo Dudamel is to be music director of the Opéra de Paris, starting work in August.

The press conference has just begun. We’ll bring updates as they unfold.

Alexander Neef, the opera chief, has just said Dudamel was the only candidate.

What took so long for the long-mooted deal to be sealed (no-one has asked this yet)?

UPDATE: Dudamel en Paris: une bonne idée?

Comments

  • Gustavo says:

So he’ll be in town to conduct the opening concert at Notre Dame.

    Mahler’s 2nd.

    • Concertgebouw79 says:

Very good choice Mahler’s 2nd the idea of resurrection. But Opera de Paris is not used to play Mahler often. Jordan previously was more a specialist of Richard Strauss and Berlioz.

      • Gustavo says:

        Mahler is easier than Strauss.

        • Concertgebouw79 says:

That’s a possiblity but the second part of the 6th and the last movment of the 9th are very very difficult. It can be a nightmare for the conductors like the 4th of Sibelius

  • PianistW says:

Another smart appointment… marketing-wise. He cannot conduct opera… Cannot play piano, does not have enough knowledge of foreign languages, and at least in my opinion, musically is nothing special.
