Nevada police sergeant John Lenz came close to losing his life when a suspect shot him to avoid arrest just before Christmas.

A bullet went through Lenz’s jaw and fractured his spine. He feared he would bleed to death before an ambulance arrived.

Two months later, Lenz was back playing cello this weekend in the Reno Philharmonic, which he joined in 2001. His father played cello and principal horn.

There are some happy endings.
