    Contemporary music?
Contemporary would be to hand the Vienna Philharmonic over to Ja Rule and have him use it as a beat-box.
    That would be contemporary.
    It would be art.
It would be legitimate Grammy material.
    It would be PROGRESS.

      Think about it.
It would be the world’s first Black Philharmonic Orchestra – and it wouldn’t need to have a single Black musician.
All those White Austrians would do just fine.

Not only are these comments pretty racist, they’re also misinformed. There’s the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste, the National Symphony Orchestra Ghana, the Orchestra Philharmonique Ste. Trinité, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nigeria, the National Youth Orchestra of Kenya, the Nairobi Orchestra, the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Noir… too many to list, I’m sure.

  • The View from America says:

With hair like that, how can he not be a success?

  • Gianluigi says:

    Artistic Chef, not Artistic Director.

    • norman lebrecht says:

      what, precisely, is the difference?

      • Gianluigi says:

In Poland there are two levels of management in every cultural institution:

Directors – highest, most prestigeous one (General Director, Music Director/Artistic Director) – responsible for the entire institution or few departments of it,
Chief/managers – people responisible only for one department.

So Musical Director will be superior to Orchestra Chief and for example coordination, while the Orchestra Chief will be responsible only for the orchestra members.

      • Farmer Joe says:

They already have a “Director,” which is the equivalent to an Intendant, so this new conductor is more akin to a Principal or Chief Conductor, not Artistic Director (even though his title in English is “Artistic Chief”). Confusing.
