The New York Philharmonic meets its music director for the first time in a year.

A few of the players.

Without an audience.

Is that Geffen? From the street the interior looks gutted

    • Monsoon says:

      Alice Tully Hall

      • John Kelly says:

No I think it’s Geffen with the stage built out into the auditorium which I am dearly hoping will improve the sound from my grade of “Utterly Wretched” to “Almost Acceptable.” That hall with never ever be anything better.

  • Petros Linardos says:

Like him or not, it is a step forward.

  • sam says:

no wind players invited, I see, lol

  • Jasper says:

Not David Geffen Hall (aka Avery Fisher Hall). Geffen Hall does not have steps allowing access from the audience seating area to the stage (see left and right of image). Geffen Hall also has a center aisle (missing in the photo).

    • Jasper says:

Correction: David Geffen Hall two off-center aisles, and two side aisles (http://www.lincolncenter.org/venue/david-geffen-hall).

To reiterate, image above is not Geffen Hall.

      • Richard F says:

Yes it is Geffen Hall! The staircases are pretty much only there during a rehearsal. I’ve played there several times. Also, Tully Hall has different looking walls.

        • NYMike says:

You need new eyeglassses. Geffen Hall is currently undergoing renovation and is completely surrounded by scaffolding. Its insides are being redone and not in any condition for performances.

        • Stephen Owades says:

Geffen Hall stage has those odd acoustic reflectors on the side walls. Alice Tully Hall stage has perforated grillwork at the back to allow the organ to be heard (when the back wall isn’t opened); Geffen Hall has no pipe organ. And, as has been mentioned above, Tully Hall has no aisles except at the outer edges. This photo is taken in Tully Hall.

        • NYMike says:

Notice posted on a Tully Hall lobby door: NY Phil stage entrance. The earth is round (or spherical if you prefer), Biden won the election, 2 + 2=4, and the above photo is Tully Hall. ‘Nuff said.

    • Zandonai says:

Jaap is back and you guys are bellyaching about a hall that you have long forgotten what it looks like?

  • Barry Guerrero says:

I guess by default, now there’s no arguing over whether Jaap has the best band in town or not. I thought they were pretty darn good in their alleged no. 2 spot.

  • Jasper says:

    See images below.

Alice Tully Hall stage: http://pdoinc.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/DSR-Alice-Tully-6311.jpg (No sound baffles at Alice Tully.)

Image atop this thread, no sound baffles. Ergo, …
