The number of musicians signing a protest against Vladimir Putin’s oppression has risen to just under 500.

Latest signatories include the doyen composer Valentin Silvestrov, violinist Dmitri Sitkovetsky, pianist Peter Jablonski, and Mariinsky opera  conductor Mikhail Agrest.

The full list of signatories can be found here.

But Putin has plenty of friends who maintain his authoritarian rule.

    Has Netrebko signed yet?

  • Rogerio says:

Putin benefits from white privilege – Russian style.
Thin about it – white privilege in a country that is 100% white.
It’s what the Americans are going to get when Trump is re-elected in 2024.
A Texas snow storm of white privilege.

  • The bandersnatch says:

    Good for them!!!

  • Listener says:

    Are you listening Valery?
Even thought you might not give anything on politics (fair enough…) it is a humanistic duty to stand up against the violation of human rights. Especially in a position as kind of cultural ambassador in Europe.

  • Roman says:

I’m not sure Putin knows who Silvestrov, Sitkovetsky or Kissin are.

Also, among the signatures is one from Polina Osetinskaya, a decent pianist. I strongly recommend to whoever can read this post to watch her performance of Bach Concerto No.1. It is probably the best performance of this piece I’ve heard recently: https://youtu.be/osg_WmeLxQk

  • Sanda Schuldmann says:

It takes guts to stand up to dictators. I applaud those who signed. It is high time that the musical world follows suit and stops hiring Putin’s artists no matter how good they are. The world has practically caved to Gherghiev, Netrebko, Matsuev, etc. STOP IT! Plenty of equally great talent elsewhere!

    • Novagerio says:

Sanda: So, according to your logic, let’s boycott all arts and all artists who served the Medicis, the Borgias, the Farneses, most of the Renaissance, Frederick the Great of Prussia, Bismarck, Stalin, George Bush Sr and Jr, Trump, Putin, Orbán, Andrzej Duda, and dare I mention AH?…
      Because C-Major is not Liberal-Red-Progressionist enough?…

  • JussiB says:

so if they get enough signatures will Putin be recalled? how does this work?
