An all-too-familiar press release these days:

Due to the current Covid-19 regulations, Diana Damrau is unable to travel to Berlin for the concert on 27 February conducted by Christian Thielemann. Camilla Nylund takes over the soprano part in Richard Strauss’ orchestral songs.

Not that there’d have been anyone in the hall to dazzle with that gold dress.

  • The View from America says:

Jacquelyn Wagner would have been a good choice. I think she resides in Berlin.

    • RW2013 says:

Wagner is great, a heart-wrenching Suor Angelica in Köln years ago.
But despite Nylund singing everything, everywhere and always, she sings it all at a very high standard.

  • Carl says:

Aren’t there any other sopranos around in Europe than overrated boring Nylund??? Casting departments really don’t seem to have a profound knowledge of who’s around and worth listening to.

  • MacroV says:

I’m curious where Diana Damrau lives that in the months since COVID closed things down she wouldn’t have been able to figure out until a few days in advance whether she’d be able to get to Berlin at this time.

  • Oscar Nasip says:

So all he has to add is a shallow comment about her dress? Par for the course. One imagines him by the red carpet at the next Academy Awards, mic in hand and clamoring for the attention of Katy Perry.
