The former president of the Munich Academy for Music, Siegfried Mauser, has yet to see the inside of a jail, a year after he was ordered to report to start a sentence of two years and nine months for sexual assault.

Mauser, 66, is using two passports – German and Austrian – and every trick in the book to stay free and shame the legal system.

Latest here.

I’m not well acquainted neither with this process nor with Mr Mauser’s work (his repertoire falls mostly outside of my musical interest), but his by now old CD release of Schubert’s Winterreise (with singer Thomas E. Bauer; OEHMS Classics, 2005) has the prophetic title “Schubert in Sibirien”.

  • V.Lind says:

I don’t get it. He can only be in one place at a time. If he is in Austria can’t they arrest him there? Surely they have an extradition treaty with Germany.

Who is it that does not want him to see the inside of a jail cell? Austria has been on the wrong side of so many issues — why not this one? But the fact is that the man has been convicted of crimes and sentenced. This is not like refusing to hear anything against Domingo, against whom presumably no accusations have ever been levelled in Austria. If Mauser is there, he is being shielded from the LAW of a fellow EU country.

    • Andreas B. says:

It isn’t a matter of extradition.

He and his lawyers are claiming medical reasons. They are pursuing all legal avenues open to them.

Admittedly, not a good look and highly frustrating, but still due process it seems…

  • Richard Master says:

Not all sexual harassers technically belong in jail and many exploit their position of prominence to get their doses daily. Take the situation of Monica L., she famously said that her relationship with her boss “constituted a gross abuse of power.”

    • V.Lind says:

I tend to agree with your opening assertion — I accept it in regard to the allegations (which I accept) against Domingo.

But Mauser has been tried, convicted and sentenced. (I think “sex pest” is misleadingly frivolous — I am currently cherrypicking my way through SVU and see it rather more seriously). H|e technically DOES beling in jail — or, given his sentence, prison.

I have little sympathy for “Monica L,” who was of age when she came to Washington and who told her pals before she left California or wherever it was that she was taking her “presidential kneepads.” He had plenty of culpability and exploited his power, but she was a (young|) adult who entered a disgusting (because he was married) situation willingly. She failed to make much of herself professionally thereafter, but has successfully reinvented herself as a victim and made a good living from it. America, eh?

      • Lothario Hunter says:

Spot on. Having an affair with a married boss is a disgusting situation. Likewise, I have no sympathy for the “Monica Ls” of this world. Nor for the horny married boss. How many bosses forget that ‘walls have ears’? They do, and they are infested with bugs.

  • Karl says:

He used to be referred to as the Munich Molester. That’s a lot different than being a sex pest. Do sex pests really belong in prison? The article says this:

Mauser, who believes he is a victim of a campaign of revenge, received a lot of public support during his trial. In 2019, for Mauser’s 65th birthday, an academic commemorative publication was published, the preface of which excuses the crimes with the honoree’s “global eros”.

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

Honestly, I think prison would be just an ideal place to be for any ‘sex pest’!! But with leniency the official modern approach to criminality there isn’t a scintilla of surprise – for me – that this man is still ‘at large’. (Sounds like a newspaper editor, or something similar, doesn’t it!!)

  • The View from America says:

So far, he seems to have been pretty adept at playing the cat-and-maus game …

  • henry williams says:

Iam sure Austria do not care about his past record.

    • Andreas B. says:

      Wrong:
the Austrian authorities did order him to report to to serve his sentence in Puch prison last May.

Since then he has been claiming to be medically unfit.
