The Russian Ministry of Culture has appointed Vasily Petrenko to be artistic director of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra, known as the Svetlanov state orchestra, from September.

Petrenko, longterm music director at the Royal Liverpool Phil and now with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, succeeds the over-stretched Vladimir Jurowski in the role.

Anyone with the sheer Balls to wear a cardigan that square, deserves all the success in the world. All credit to ya, mate.

  • Top man….more than capable and unlike that narrow little enclave mostly in central Europe,no ego problems or baggage.

  • NYMike says:

Petrenko subbed last-minute @ Carnegie Hall’s BRSO 11/9/19 concert for an ailing Jansons, conducting Shostakovich 10. The performance, which I attended, was stellar.

    • Peter Phillips says:

      Was that BRSO performance recorded?

      • John Kelly says:

I was there and I don’t believe I saw microphones. I agree with NY Mike, the Shostakovitch 10th was fantastic and the BRSO has a simply magnificent principal bassoon with a gorgeous sound and tremendous presence.

Adored by his Liverpool audiences, and renowned for the precision of his stick technique combined with a flexibility of interpretation which earn him the respect and admiration of orchestral musicians. A charismatic conductor, who, one hopes, will avoid the mistake of spreading himself too thinly.

  • He should have been one of the more obvious candidates for the LSO.I have read one report that suggests Marin Alsopp is amongst those being considered, has the management of the LSO got a death wish, she was a second rate conductor at Bournemouth.Oh well at least we have the Philharmonia and Philharmonic.

If anyone is in any doubt about this mans talent they should seek out the YouTube performances of Beethoven 9 with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain or better still his performance of Elgar 2 with the RLPO at the proms
