The Hollywood voice coach David Romano who duetted with Luciano Pavarotti in the 1982 MGM film Yes, Giorgio has died of heart disease at 69.

An important teacher of Josh Groban and Sarah Brightman, he sang on several opera stages and acted in Phantom of the Opera.

 

The iconic building will resume performances on Tuesday with The Merry Widow.

Audiences will be obliged to wear masks. Capacity is held at 75 per cent.

Artistic director Lyndon Terracini said: ‘Walking back into the theatre was a very emotional time for everyone …I think throughout this year, other opera houses will be opening very soon and people will be coming back to the theatre with a sense of hope.’

 

The Portuguese government has declared a national day of mourning on Monday for fado singer Carlos do Carmo, who has died in hospital of an aortic aneurysm.

Carlos, 82, was known as the Portuguese Frank Sinatra, esteemed by intellectuals for his ‘moral elegance’.
