Interesting, especially if they’re hit by a music director vacancy in the New Year.

As a performance, it’s far wittier than Gergiev’s

  • MacroV says:

Enough with this “projected vacancy” thing. You’re a journalist, act like one. Do you have a single credible source who has told you that Sir Simon might leave if he gets the BRSO gig? Surely he is capable of holding both.

  • Anon says:

Mirga looks like a new mom.

  • BP says:

Hyping Mirga and panning Gergiev again, I see. A classic Slipped Disc post !

  • STEPHEN BIRKIN says:

As I understand it, she stepped in for Roth who was a victim of Covid travel restrictions. I’m not convinced you can read any more into it than that.

  • M McAlpine says:

Witty? Not the word I would have used to describe it. But then I’m not a paid-up member of the Mirga fan-club.

  • microview says:

Terrific Jansons live version on BR Klassik label

  • Petros Linardos says:

Watch? I notice that Mirga comes across as very professional. No karate chops, silly hair or funny facial expressions like those seen in promotional photographs.

Listen? Unremarkable. Yet she deserves the benefit of the doubt. This is music making under adverse circumstances.

Sometimes I feel sorry for Mirga for all the ridiculous hype is subjected to. In the long run it may be more hurtful than helpful for her career.

  • Peter Phillips says:

A conductor who can sing properly is a rare occurrence. And Mirga can certainly sing beautifully to judge from this clip. She also talks about the music thoughtfully, humorously and without pomposity.

  • Barbara says:

Thank you for this. Wonderful seeing the close-ups of the percussion instruments and also comparing it with Bizet.
