A Portuguese singer with a hugely promising career was killed on Saturday night when a car driven by her boyfriend was involved in a pile-up with three other vehicles.

Sara Carreira, 21, was the daughter of one of the country’s most celebrated singers, Tony Carreira. She made her stage debut with Tony in 2014.

The Portuguese president sent his condolences ‘in this moment of pain, mourning and shock’. The family has asked for peace and privacy.

Other victims of the crash are recovering in hospital.

    so sad, RIP

How desperately saddening, just before Christmas. Her poor family and friends — a year of Covid, and now this. Sympathies to all of them.

Sadly, Sara Carreira was not the only musical victim of that tragic accident.

One of Portugal’s most noted fado artists, Cristina Branco, and her ten-year-old daughter, were also badly injured.
According to Diário de Notícias, Cristina Branco and her daughter suffered multiple fractures. However, according to the girl’s father and Branco’s former husband, writer and journalist Tiago Salazar, their injuries appear serious but not life-threatening.

I must declare a personal interest: Cristina Branco is the most atypical and innovative “fadista” I have ever heard; she is also the one whose career I’ve followed most keenly.
Hearing her again on stage, in Portugal, is one of the top items on my bucket list, if we manage to pull through the next wave of the pandemic.
