Of the Broadway type shows I have played for that was my favorite and easily the greatest. Frank Loesser’s music is perfect for the story. His pianist brother Arthur, who I had recent reason to mention for recording with the great violinist Maud Powell, described Frank as “the evil of two Loessers.”
Brilliant
When I was a child Stubby Kaye hosted a TV program on Saturday mornings titled Shennanigans. All I remember is him singing the intro and that he was relatable to children. Belated RIP.
I remember that show as well. Only ran for two seasons, and I too just remember the opening and closing themes.
They don’t make them like that anymore. Great stuff!
A great number! The only problem with the film was casting Marlon Brando.
For the record, let’s identify the performer (who also appeared in the stage production): Bernard Solomon Kotzin, aka Stubby Kaye.
The inimitable Bernard Shalom Kotzin (Stubby Kaye). He created this role in Guys & Dolls.
On stage, of course, this number brings the house down. But the film version, where it’s followed by utter silence except for the clock ticking, is brilliant.
Standing ovation for this!
Thanks!
