When you test more you find more cases. It’s been known for a long time that half of people who get it have mild or no symptoms. CDC data from back in March showed that 1 in every 5 people who are infected with COVID-19 develop difficulty in breathing and require hospital care. But with all the extra cases found with extensive testing I bet it’s much less now. Wiki says Italy has over 700,000 active cases and the AP says half the hospital beds are full. It looks like there are about 190,000 hospital beds in Italy so that would make about 100,000 hospitalizations out of 700,000 cases, a 14% hospitalization rate. That would make 7 hospitalizations out of 50 infections. A guess by Doc Karl.

No, only testing those who had fallen ill with something that might have been the coronavirus. If they only tested those who had already fallen ill with the virus, the result would have been a much higher percentage!
