The chairman of the Théatre du Chatelet today issued a statement in praise of Ruth Mackenzie, the British director it abruptly terminated in August.

He calls her ‘an audacious and talented artistic director’ who ‘successfully created and put in place for future seasons’ a programme which her successor is determined to fulfil.

Which rather begs the question why she was fired.

Fired her – and now praises her.
One has to wonder what Ruth ‘has’ on them.
    These things happen, you know…

Too many miles on the clock mate, this always happens in the Arts, first you get a medal, then praise for improving attendance or tourist targets and then you get the sack as someone’s relative has booked the wee job.

French hypocrisy knows no limits. I have once been fired from a French orchestra, under very similar circumstances and never was even told why, only that I didn’t show respect to the French language! Then I was told that I was very appreciated, only to be told six months later that I was fired for being incompetent!
Ruth Mackenzie should be grateful to be out of there and I’m sure that she will find interesting work in a more sympathetic and international country. France operates like a provincial backwater and is not really on an international level. I wish her the best of luck!
