The New York office of IMG Artists has snatched the Spanish conductor Juanjo Mena from the Cami wreckage, where he was formerly represented by Stefana Atlas.

Mena, previously with the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester, is presently Principal Conductor of the Cincinnati May Festival.

    Who is Gergiev with now?

  • Fernandel says:

For sure, the career of this scandalously underrated conductor will take off. Lies Askonas are gripped with anguish.

    • Wurtfangler says:

On the evidence of his pretty poor broadcasts with the BBC Phil I would say he is far from underrated. Whenever I heard them under him they had none of the sparkle and clarity and tight ensemble that I heard under Downes, Tortelier, Noseda or Sinaisky (or other guest conductors).

You can’t be serious! (© John McEnroe) The Bayerischer Rundfunk and the Concertgebouw are fighting to the death to make him their next music director.

      • Fred says:

You’re a great observer but your hearing starts to get worse!!

      • Robert says:

My experience exactly. After Noseda he was a real letdown

      • Rob says:

The BBC Phil never recovered after the death of Maestro Downes, a genius conductor if there ever was. Since, there’s been a series of very poor *stars*. The BBC Phil under Downes was a very great orchestra. I know, I went to several of their concerts.

  • yujafan says:

he’s decent enough – have reviewed him several times rather favourably

  • Evan Tucker says:

He’s a genuinely great musician who apparently has a bit of the old school authoritarian streak. For musicianship, he really is that good, and even if things didn’t work out with the BBC Philharmonic, in terms of raw musical ability he has more to spare than a lot of their other recent chief conductors, none of whom are inconsiderable in their musicianship. Anyone who can do Beethoven 7 like this is nearly as good as it gets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XzNMp8d4SY

Who cares about these management moves?

  • Lorentz Reitan says:

Mena is a brilliant conductor. Recommended by de Burgos he was for a period first guest conductor in Bergen Phil in Norway. Always brilliant interpretations. Looking forward to listening to his performances again. He is a hidden diamond. Congratulations IMG!
