  • Several times I have seen on Youtube some very good videos of Dima Slobodeniouk with the excellent orchestra Galicia if he wants to change of orchestra and stay in Spain it would be a very good choice.

    • Novagerio says:

The Galician orchestra is by far a superior orchestra. But of course it depends of when Slobodeniuk’s contract expires, and what he has next.

  • Rodrigo says:

No it’s not. The orchestras in Madrid do not particularly like foreigners. Very few foreign members, and they keep it that way. They are tightly controlled by the govt and they need someone who knows the political ropes to navigate as MD. Dima is much better off in Galicia. Better orchestra, better conditions and the orch has many foreigners who he can work easily with. Since the days of Fruhbeck de Burgos, a music director position of a Madrid orch is practically a political appointment. David Afkam in ONE is the exception.

I predict this job will go to a Spaniard who is well positioned. You know Pedro Halffter will be gunning for it. This is not a desireable orchestra by any means. There are what 3 or 4 full time orchs in Madrid. Isn’t this the one that plays zarzuela?

There are a hand full of lukewarm Spanish conductors who are well positioned to be music directors. They don’t generally work outside of Spain, but they are well known and accepted within Spain. Spain feels obligated to employ them. The job will just pass on to another of this group. I guarantee you they will not consider foreigners for this job.

    • Manu says:

Yeah sure, all Spaniards in Madrid… Ivor Bolton is chief of the Teatro Real and Afkham of the National orchestra.

    • Jay Bee says:

It’ll be Luisotti. Mark my words.

    • If they need a Spanish director there s a man perfect for the job Gustavo Gimeno!

      • Rodrigo says:

He is way above this appointment. He’s actually a very good conductor & a frontrunner for several top tier orchs. I think Toronto is one. He’s smart. He wouldn’t waste his time with this orch. and neither would Dima.

Look, there are 2 catagories of Spanish conductors: the ones who are on the international circuit conducting top orchs & the ones who are not quite of that level & who stay in Spain. The ones who stay in Spain make a very good living conducting orchestras like this one.

        • He made a very good impresion with the Concertgebouw last summer I saw it on Youtube, a place he knows very very well. But maybe you are a little bit tough with the Madrid Orchestra I don’t know

          • Rodrigo says:

Yes, of course! Gimeno is an honorary “son” of Concertgebouw. It’s where he got his start. He was their principal timpanist for many years and made his transition to conducting there.
He then became MD of Luxembourg.

I just checked his web page. Gimeno is now Music Director of Toronto. I don’t really think he’ll be giving that job up to conduct a zaruzuela orchestra in Madrid.

  • Jay Bee says:

Lousy Luisotti will fill the job

  • I have to say that I don’t know very well the orchestra of Mardrid. I have the feeling that it don’t do a lot of tournee outside of Spain in Europe and the TVE orchestra is more present on Youtube.

  • Mark Doole says:

    The tender conditions say:

“Tener nacionalidad española, o la de cualquier otro Estado incluido, depleno derecho, en la Unión Europea”

that means that any EU nationals can apply (sorry, no Britons anymore)

Anyway, if they published the offer 7 days before the deadline is because they already have a candidate that has been working on the “artistic proposal” for a long time.

  • Novagerio says:

There seems to be confusion here regarding the Madrid orchestras: the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid (ORCAM) is not the ONE (Orquesta Nacional de España) wich used to be Argenta’s and Frühbeck’s orchestra.
The ORCAM has José Ramón Encinar listed as Music director.
And Luisotti? He might be more interested in the Sinfonica de Madrid, meaning the Teatro Real.

  • fflambeau says:

I know nothing about orchestras in Spain but have seen on Youtube one of my favorite conductors, a Swede, conduct the Galicians. The Rimsky K piece on Youtube has amost 3 million hits. They are good.

  • JussiB says:

what about Maurizio Pollini’s son he’s a good conductor.
