The soprano Danielle De Niese, who is married to Glyndebourne heir Gus Christie, has given birth to a baby girl, their second child.

Gus and I are absolutely delighted to announce the birth of our precious baby girl, Sheherazade Mary Christabel. She is the first baby girl at @Glyndebourne in 54 years, and came into the world on 13th November at 9:24pm weighing 7lbs 13 oz. My labour was very fast- just under 4 hours, but we are all doing well and our son, Bacchus, is beyond thrilled to have a little sister to cuddle and look out for! The whole family are over the moon and we are enjoying this special moment together at home at Glyndebourne.

She was working as a BBC presenter only last week.

That probably explains why she has been the house soprano of choice for several productions over the years. That, and talent of course.

Glynde-born thanks to birds and the bee’s Niese

Bacchus and Sheherazade. Great names! Mazel tov to the proud parents.

Great names indeed! A good friend of mine, soprano, named her first Eleonore, her second, Florestan; i enquired what she would do when she’d passed Marzelline, Rocco, Don Pizzaro….etc, would the umpteenth have to be named “1st Prisoner, 2nd Prisoner, Soldier1 …. ” and so on. Fortunately she stopped just in time and returned to lyric arts.
Mazel tov, indeed, to the proud parents!

Bacchus and Sheherazade. That seals their fate! You can’t go to the local school with names like that! Playing that sort of practical joke on children ought to be banned!

  • Claudia Fournier says:

Those names will doubtless be shortened to something less pretentious such as Baccy and Sherry. Both are unfortunate choices; Bacchus was a cruel god and being given his name could presage a career as a boozer, and Sheherezade was obliged to tell stories all night to remain alive…
