Cologne terminates its opera chief

The city has told Opernintendantin Birgit Meyer it won’t extend her contract beyond 2022.

The reason? She has been there 10 years and they want a new face.

Beyond that? The bill for rebuilding the opera will top a billion Euros, four times the approved estimate.

Someone has to pay that price and it won’t be the politicians.

Meyer, 60, gave up a flourishing medical practice in order to work in a crisis-ridden art form. She deserves better treatment.

Good decision for Cologne. Tell me one music professional in Cologne and around who was not complaining about her.

That’s cheap. I mean the Cologne behaviour. But then again, in North Rhine-Westphalia, not many things work these days.

    Terminate? Sounds rather drastic….

I read the title of this post very differently, but fortunately my concern appeared unfounded.
