And what is it you want Jaap to do in NY?

Climb on top of the fountain at Lincoln Center with a bullhorn, yelling at Deborah Borda to reopen the hall and restart the NYP season?

See how long he can ride the NYC subway until he catches Covid?

Drive the Philharmonic pickup truck around NYC honking out “la cucuracha”?

Sell hotdogs on Broadway to earn some extra cash for the musicians’ retirement fund?

    I can go on…

    • Hal Hobbs says:

      Brilliantly said. Poor Norman.

    • Petros Linardos says:

I think you’ve made your case, but please go on. Your arguments are irresistible.

    • Bruce says:

Not to mention the very act of travelling on a plane, which would surely draw Norman’s ire if he were to go anywhere.

…or maybe, with all the extra time he has available, he can do it the way the old-time maestri used to do it, and travel on a cruise ship.

      • Stereo says:

        No cruise ships!

      • John Borstlap says:

Nowadays planes have corona proof ventilation systems.

        • Averagecomposer says:

That is one of the stupidest comments regarding the virus I’ve ever read. Planes don’t not have corona proof ventilation systems and what does “nowadays” mean. Did some massive retrofit of airline industry occur during the pandemic that some how was kept from the public? A ventilation system so secret that hospitals never got access to use this system in the ICUs?
Stick to managing the JVZ fan club.

    • Enquiring Mind says:

The Philharmonic has a pickup truck? Is that so that Jaap would be comfortable comin’ from Dallas?

  • John Kelly says:

Well, even if he wanted to get back here to NY he would find that almost impossible. He was lucky to escape abroad. “America First” has led us from a country that suddenly wanted to keep all kinds of people out to a country where its residents can’t go to any other country because we are the Covid capital of the world (though Israel isn’t doing very well either) and nobody else will let us in……………..

    • Bruce says:

“nobody else will let us in……………..”

…and with good reason. We’re a nation of dangerous idiots.

  • NYMike says:

Although the NYP’s scheduled to begin concerts 1/6/21, the entire concert season is likely to be canceled – so no reason for Jaap to be here.

  • Fred Funk says:

    Obviously, you don’t know Jaap.

  • The Screaming Scull has left the building. says:

New York has far graver concerns at the moment. I hope they don’t tack on addition seasons to his contract to make up for lost time.

  • Theodor Adorno says:

    Jaap

  • Seriously says:

The less he is around the better. Keep him and his anger, his overwrought pounding, and his self-important pomposity.

    • John Borstlap says:

Another little scream from under the rock.

      • Yippe Salter says:

Another comment from the composer following Jaap around trying to get him to program one of his pieces in a Dutch youth orchestra concert….
        Pucker up!
Let us know how it works out.

  • Manuela Hoelterhoff says:

can we assumed Dallas’s $5 million dollar maestro has relinquished a wad of his $1.7 compensation at the NYPhil?

  • Stuart says:

Hasn’t been in New York for half a year. Anyone who can afford to hasn’t been in New York for half a year.

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

He sends his love, though, and says he’s thinking about you all!!

  • Stephen Gould says:

Good place for him. With luck he’ll like it so much he’ll stay. And NYPO can then engage someone I look forward to seeing.

  • John Borstlap says:

He will be conducting the Hong Kong Phil with Beethoven symphonies. In the Far East, the coronie seems to be better under control.

Thinking of the long preparations of a season, the scores to be delved into (again), the building-up of focus and concentration, suddenly loosing a season is for busy performers a disaster with a hughe impact.

  • Cheung says:

Funny how recent events put life in perspective and some people are just simply forgotten. We have seen most top US conductors doing great things in Europe recently and others sitting home doing nothing.
Good luck HK phil, maybe he is a changed man.

    Probably not.
