  • Edgar Self says:

Bach scored it for a pair of alto recorder, Blockfloeten, to begin one of his loveliest cantatas, “Gottes eit ist der allerbeste Zeit” — “God’s Time is the Best of All Times”, tender and timeless.

It’s one that Felix Prohaska, Scherchen, , Jonathan Sternberg introuced early LP collectors to on Westminster, Lyrichord, and Bach Guild. They included the madcap soprano-alto duet “Wir eilen” with what sounds like a calliope accompaniment in Cantata 78, and a sthrilling Reformation Day Cantata 79 “Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild” with the Berlin Philharmonic horns under Fritz Lehmann on DGG in innocent pre-HIP days.
