The civil unrest in Belarus, where president Lukashenko is clinging to power after a rigged election, has claimed its first musical casualties.

It os reported that the concertmaster of the Belarus Bolshoi Theatre Regina Sarkisova (pictured) has been fired, together with violinist Alla Dzhigan and viola player Aleksandra Potemina. All three supported anti-Lukashenko protests.

In the US election, Joe Biden has pledged to delegitimise the Lukashenko regime if he wins.

“In the US election, Joe Biden has pledged to delegitimise the Lukashenko regime if he wins.”

I’m afraid Biden is going to need a rigged election himself to win.

    • Z says:

Funny you are saying this. With Republicans trying everything possible to suppress voting (e.g. Florida felony fines, Texas drop-off ballot box, voter threatening) and even run outright scams (e.g. California fake “official” ballot box), if the election were rigged, it could only be rigged by Republicans and be used to benefit Trump.

    • Couperin says:

      From Politico:
“In Philadelphia, his campaign is videotaping voters as they return ballots. In Nevada, it’s suing to force elections officials in Nevada’s Democratic-heavy Clark County to more rigorously examine ballot signatures for discrepancies that could disqualify them. The Trump campaign has sued to prevent the expanded use of ballot drop boxes in Ohio, sought to shoot down an attempt to expand absentee ballot access in New Hampshire and tried to intervene against a lawsuit brought by members of the Navajo Nation in Arizona which sought to allow ballots received from reservations after Election Day because of mail delays. And that’s just a few of its efforts.”

Meanwhile, Trump is going back to Georgia again on Sunday. GEORGIA. Trump, a so-called Republican… Is desperate for GEORGIA!!

      • Bone says:

Thank goodness you cited Politico as the source of your fakts!
As a resident of GA, I fear it becoming much more blue than is healthy.

    • SloppyJoe says:

Joe doesn’t even have basic cognitive functions any longer and is clearly unfit to do anything except check himself into a nursing home…preferably in NY.

    • Nicholas says:

It’s a pity that Biden hasn’t pledged to delegitimise the Xi regime if he wins. You would think the Biden family would love to do business with Lukashenko. After all, Biden has had a special place in his heart to engage in business deals in a foreign country whose leader is described as Leader for Life. As Biden reminds us: C’mon Man!

      • William Safford says:

The orange enemy of the people has a bank account in China:

        https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/21/us/elections/records-shed-new-light-on-trumps-business-pursuits-in-china-including-a-bank-account-there.html

“And it turns out that China is one of only three foreign nations — the others are Britain and Ireland — where Mr. Trump maintains a bank account, according to an analysis of the president’s tax records, which were obtained by The New York Times. The foreign accounts do not show up on Mr. Trump’s public financial disclosures, where he must list personal assets, because they are held under corporate names. The identities of the financial institutions are not clear.

“The Chinese account is controlled by Trump International Hotels Management L.L.C., which the tax records show paid $188,561 in taxes in China while pursuing licensing deals there from 2013 to 2015.

“Mr. Garten would not identify the bank in China where the account is held. Until last year, China’s biggest state-controlled bank rented three floors in Trump Tower, a lucrative lease that drew accusations of a conflict of interest for the president.”

Hmmmmmm, pot calling the kettle black maybe?

      • Sharon says:

I don’t know how much control Joe Biden has over his son. Zelensky of Ukraine was elected on an anti corruption platform and started an investigation which was suddenly stopped.

Hunter Biden apparently was on the board of one of the companies implicated and may have boasted that he had the Ukrainian prosecutor of the corruption charges fired. If he did say this it was incredibly stupid of him since the US Congress was interested in Ukrainian corruption because the US had given a lot of money to Ukraine after the Russian invasion of Ukraine several years ago.

I get most of my news from The Economist which believes that there may have been other reasons that the corruption investigation was stopped, like it was getting too close to people who were too powerful in Ukraine.

Nevertheless, there is no evidence that the Ukraine ever tried to influence US elections. In fact, when this happened, it was not even certain that Biden would be the presidential candidate.

As for Belarus may end up as a somewhat more mild version of Syria. I hope that the EU can put some pressure on Lukashenko but it does not look like this is happening. They don’t even seem to be putting much effort into trying to end the fighting in Aberjian (sorry if it is not spelled correctly)

    • William Safford says:

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won, fair and square.

But thank you for playing. Better luck next time.

    • William Safford says:

Despite all the efforts of the Republican Party, the Russians, and the Orange Enemy of the People, Biden won.

On January 20th, we will inaugurate President Biden and Vice-President Harris.

  • William Safford says:

What is the current status of flutist and a leader of the opposition, Maria Kolesnikova?

    From last month:

    https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-belarus-election-kolesnikova-idUKKCN26F21X

“Kolesnikova, 38, was last seen in public on Sept. 7 being snatched off a Minsk street and shoved into a van by masked men.”

    • William Safford says:

      Wow, three thumbs-down?

I guess three people approve of this flutist being snatched off the street and locked up, for saying things that the government doesn’t like.

Yes, I’m calling you three out.

Sounds just like what happens to musicians in the West who get on the wrong side of the so-called “woke warriors”.

    Except Joe Biden won’t win…
