Vienna Phil books 6 concerts with conductor, 93

Herbert Blomstedt’s diary has just filled up. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has inked him in for six dates at the Musikverein between now and Christmas.

  • Blomstedt is conductor whose superb artistry, I feel, has only really been truly acknowledged in the past 20 years or so. If that means that he is getting more bookings now that he’s 93, then all power to his elbow.

    • He is the only conductor I have ever seen/heard and/or worked with who in my opinion became noticeably better in his 80s than he was in his 50s and 60s. Stay well, Maestro!

  • S.F.’s loss is now Vienna and the rest of the world’s gain. I’ll let you read between the lines on that one. Let’s just say I’m happy E.-P. Salonen will eventually be coming to my town to replace the outgoing regime.
