Our four nights of opera in Vienna confirmed my view that the Staatsoper is one of the great opera houses of the world and one of the most beautiful. It is also taking on the challenge of opera in the Covid era and showing it can be done. At a time when Covent Garden is dark apart from online performances and the Met has cancelled all operas until next year, Vienna is showing it is possible to put on opera. Let’s hope others follow – otherwise the future of opera and indeed live music is seriously under threat.

totally agree with Mr.Kerr on what he has said about Opera Vienna . It’s every time good to see positive news.

Can only add personally for Mr.Kerr to give it a try to attend “Aida” with Elina Stikhina when possible. I have recently attended ( with a superb cast, including madame Semenchuk as Amneris among other top-notch singers) the performance. Elina is a perfect Aida with all her platinum overtones and powerful yet tender voice. Magnificient mix of Mirella Freni and Kiri te Kanawa is her voical mastership. And, of course, she has put a lot of herself both vocally and dramatically in the part. For such an operagoer like you it would be a lavish treat if you be able to listen to it.
