Moldova television has reported that the National Philharmonic hall in the centre of the capital Chisinau (Kishinev) has been totally destroyed by fire. The flames raged out of control for four hours.

The cause is being blamed on construction work.

Patricia Kopatchinskaja writes: The Moldovan Philharmonic in Chisinau burned down yesterday night. Including the orchestra’s library, manuscripts by Moldovan composers, all Instruments. The most likely cause is a short circuit. It’s like when a whole part of our national biography has been destroyed in flames and disappeared forever in smoke.

I am so sorry to hear it. I whish I had had a chance to go there. As so often happens after reading bad news here, I will now search for old recordings and videos. A strange relationship with time.

Heartbraking event. So many wonderful memories.I was several time a week for concerts at Kishinev Philarmonie. I performed there ,too. It was a beautiful building-closed to music college, opera house, repertory Russian theatre, movie house and park with concert hall.

  • Julian Faigan says:

Very sad, I was there late last year, but there were no performances during my visit. Terrible news for all Moldovan musicians.

  • Another orchestral musician says:

Terrible year for the arts… heartbreaking.
