The first concert of live music at Leeds Town Hall will be a programme of Mendelssohn, Schubert and Mozart, performed by the Orchestra of Opera North and tenor Nicholas Watts, at 6.00pm next Friday 28 August.

The concert will last approximately an hour, with no interval, and as part of the safety measures there will be no bars or refreshment stations open in the Town Hall.

Tickets go on sale from Monday.

Tickets are £10. Will be a weird experience.

  • George says:

    More of this, please.

Leeds is, surprisingly, a young people’s town so it might work.

    • SVM says:

I get the impression that there are plenty of older people who are prepared to attend live concerts. I have just returned from attending an evening recital at Snape Maltings (tickets went on sale about a week ago, and sold out on the same day as they went on sale), and most of the audience looked to be of “free bus pass” age (although I did not see any ‘concert buses’).

  • Player says:

Well done, them! Where is London?

  • Rich C. says:

And Leeds is back in the Prem after ages.

16 years in the wilderness! First game on Sep 12 is at Liverpool – should be an easy win for Leeds………….now Liverpool has a very good orchestra, Leeds has the Opera North orchestra and a season filled by visiting bands (there used to be a Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra). The Halle has a season in Sheffield but not Leeds….why no Leeds Symphony Orchestra? Leeds-Bradford is now the second largest conurbation in the UK with over a million people – Bournemouth has an orchestra – and a football team (just relegated)………..

      • Phil Boughton says:

        We are Yorkshire’s Symphony Orchestra!
The Orchestra of Opera North has always had a year round remit both in the opera house / Grand Theatre and on tour and in the region’s concert halls. We have worked closely with both Leeds City and Kirklees Councils over many years to ensure that the Orchestra’s symphonic programme has as big an outlet as the operatic work that was the reason the Orchestra was founded in the first place.
The schedule of an orchestra within an opera house is never as sustained as that of a Chorus. The latter spends more time in rehearsal than performance compared to an orchestra spending more time in performance than rehearsal. The concerts, education work and recordings, in addition to the operatic work ensure that we can maintain the full time salaried musicians.
The number of visiting orchestras that are consistantly part of the Leeds International Concert Season combined with the seasons in neighbouring towns curated by other orchestras mean that Leeds and the surrounding area is well served by its home orchestra and visiting orchestras.
