Mark Thompson, the former BBC director general who has been chief executive of the NY Times since 2012, is stepping down.

Thompson, 62, has transformed the Grey Lady into a digital powerhouse with five mllion subscribers, albeit one that has lost much of its editorial authority in dealings with the Wikileaks saga and the Trump regime.

A brass player and lover of Messiaen, Mark will have plenty of interests to occupy his post-Times time.

His replacement is the Times’s COO, Meredith Kopit Levien.

Due to my extremely wishful thinking, I misread the headline and thought that perhaps the NY Times had replaced Anthony Tommasini.

  • Sunset of the NYT says:

Hopefully Ms. Levien will make all of the digital content pay-per-view or better yet put all of their articles behind a single paywall and jack up prices on all fronts the NYT franchises out.

“… lost much of its editorial authority in dealings with the Wikileaks saga and the Trump regime.” Uh, no. What a strange and spurious claim. You would have to look far to find anyone who agrees that its editorial status has diminished in any significant way. So what’s your beef with the Gray Lady, Norman?

  • Making NY Great Again? says:

Did Trump force the NYT to go ‘white’??

How will #BLM deal with this racial injustice???

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

The grey lady? Yes, but a senile one.

  • Mick the Knife says:

I like the part about brass player and Messiaen but any reasonable person should he horrified by the crap that once excellent newspaper writes.

  • Edgar Self says:

News on paper clearly is doomed, but you’d think there is enough wish for literate, mature, sophisticated, wit-illumined journalism to support one literate rag. Anyone know one? Is “Die Welt” still any good? Any British or even godhelpus American periodical? French? Are all the songs sung, all cultured critics super-annuated? No Saturday Review on any coast? Do we all go down to Orphus un-sung? Must even Beauty die? And is there no end to these quesetions?

  • Jack says:

I wonder is Sulzberger deemed Thompson insufficiently woke.
