The outstanding South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza has confirmed overnight that she is in hospital for the fourth day with a diagnosis of Covid-19. She was admitted to hospital with ‘stomach pain, a constant feeling of dizziness ,vomiting, temperature a bit high, feeling cold but sweating, painful when breathing deep, weak joints and general fatigue’.

Pumeza, 41, sang Porgy and Bess last season in Vienna, Rusalka in Düsseldorf and Boheme in Dallas. She has released two recordings on Decca and is based in Berlin. She went to South Africa in March for concert dates.

She posts: Thank you for all your good health wishes! Really much appreciated! I’d like to answer you all but I’m too tired to write.
I tested positive for corona. I need to stay in hospital a bit longer than I expected.

UPDATE: July 07, 1830: My white blood cell count plummeted and the liver enzymes shot up the roof in just a few days.At least now they aren’t getting worse.I’m having daily blood tests to monitor this and find other possible causes.
Apart from that, I’m permanently dizzy ( much better after some medication through the drip) but the exhaustion is worse today than it’s been,it’s like a bus drove over me.
Only today, I have pain when swallowing! Breathing and temperature are back to normal.
I feel I‘ll pull through..

This is horrible news! Pumeza Matshikiza was in Toronto last year to sing in the Glenn Gould Gala, in honour of Jessye Norman, who was in town to receive the Glenn Gould Award. I remember how beautiful the soprano sang the Richard Strauss song “Cacile” and “Song to the Moon” from Rusalka. She also sang a lovely Xhosa folk song.

Incidentally, Matshikiza sang the Dvorak opera in Klagenfurt, not Dusseldorf. I wish her a speedy and complete recovery.

Not funny when young Nick Cordero died yesterday.

Among MANY, MANY whites, including the well-to-do. The first well-known people to contract it (March 10) were Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. Neither poor nor black.

“COVID19 is clearly hitting the poor, black community harder and is racist!”

So… they’re inferior? Is that what you’re saying?

  • Bruce says:

Somehow I had not heard of her before. She is wonderful. Best wishes for a full recovery.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for you and a lifetime immunity from Covid-19!! It sounds absolutely dreadful.
