Edward L. Alley, who succeeded Henry Fogel as orchestra manager of the New York Philharmonic in 1981, has died in Sarasota where he was a trustee of the Sarasota Opera.

Other career highlights were as associate director of the Opera Center at Juilliard and director of the Exxon/Arts Endowment Conductors Program.

  • Peggy Sweeney says:

He will be sorely missed in Sarasota where he was a ubiquitous musical figure — as lecturer, critic, bon vivant and, perhaps most important to him, the devoted husband until her death of June LeBell, a former “DJ” on WQXR in New York who, together with him, brightened the musical scene in Sarasota.

  • David J Hyslop says:

Sad indeed. I knew Ed mainly from his days with the

Exxon/Arts conductor program. He and I had reconnected

about a month ago and had a very good conversation. Did

    not know he was ill.
