Deutsche Grammophon is planning to stream Tosca from Naples with Anna Netrebko on July 30.

DG Stage will charge 12.90 Euros per view, taking the record business into direct competition with opera houses like the Met that are aiming to stream their own events.

Competition is healthy. Let’s see how the numbers pan out.

Press release: Opera-lovers will be able to watch an open-air production of Puccini’s Tosca staged at the Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples by the Teatro San Carlo and starring Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov and Ludovic Tézier on 30 July. “We’re thrilled at the thought of being back on stage,” said Netrebko and Eyvazov. “Presenting Tosca to the world from this stunning outdoor theatre will be an unforgettable experience.”

    “12.90€ per view”

Way to go, undercutting the Met’s $20 per view!

Alright, the race is on for the cheapest online ticket this summer!

(LOL, I like the 0.90€, they couldn’t make it an even 13€ or 12.50€)

  • Brian says:

Well, a better price than the $20 a pop that the Met charges for its pay-per-view recitals.

Incidentally, a curious lack of social distancing or face masks in that press conference photo. Hope it was brief for their sake.

    • Scott says:

I guarantee you the production values will not be equal to the Met outlays for the recitals. $20 for an hour-twenty minute concert is a bargain for a world-class performance.

  • Jay says:

How ridiculous this is…what is missing and is of paramount significance is the personal reaction to a
performer which is what music is all about, what we have here is an event controlled by sound and video engineers,
you hear through their ears and see through their eyes; the
event is presented to you second hand; years ago it was
called “going to the movies “It was never the real “thing ”
and we knew it . To pretend this is the real thing or the next best to the real thing is to insult the music. People will
it seems do anything for money.

    • Novagerio says:

I’m with you there Jay. People can’t distinguish between empiric pleasure and virtual ditto. As a legendarian conductor once said when asked why he didn’t make studio recordings: “Do you prefer to go to bed with Brigitte Bardot or masturbate to her picture?”

  • Lenny says:

We had tickets for Anna’s Tosca at the Met in March. The Met closed its doors a week before the performance.
We were going specifically to see her.
    ☹☹☹

  • P.D. says:

Again AN, again the same dreadful photo of her….
She is not a good Tosca, her husband is a joke in everything what he sings, and while Tézier is the best out of the principals, Scarpia is not a well suited role for him… would not pay a penny to see/listen to this… Povera opera!
