    He was a prolific composer rather than a day to day performer. He composed 26 symphonies, 17 string quartets, 7 operas and much more. He was a Polish Jew who emigrated to Russia. He was a close friend of Dimitri Shostakovitch and knew well Gilels, Rostropovich and others.

    The recorded piece above is lovely.
