The death has been announced of Miroslav Skorik, awarded the title Hero of Ukraine for many patriotic film scores and other commissions. The heart of his work consists of nine violin concertos. He was a cousin of the famous opera singer Solomiya Krushelnytska, who first fostered his talent.

In the 1990s he migrated with his family to Australia, only to return home for his last years.

The the Orquesta de Extremadura has named a young Madrid conductor Andrés Salado as its music director from next season.

From a new essay by the former Detroit Symphony music director:

… Almost every time I have conducted a Haydn symphony, for example, when we get to the repeat in the first movement, there is inevitably a page turn immediately followed by a continuation of the violin part and sometimes all the other instruments. That is why we have two people on a stand in the string section, a practice that has been in place for a couple centuries. One has to stop playing and then quickly and adroitly negotiate turning the page so all will go smoothly.

But without stand partners to perform this action, the music will simply have to stop. There is no way around that, is there? Well, maybe there is. …

The Gewandhaus Orchestra is rolling out a summer festival from June 7.

It’s mostly chamber music – a Beethoven’s quintet, works by Clara Schumann and the world premiere of a 9th string quartet by Lera Auerbach. But Andris Nelsons will wind up the festival with two short concerts with the Gewandhaus orchestra in chamber size.

‘Even if we cannot get together as usual,’ says Nelsons, ‘I am convinced that the intimate and reflective mood of chamber music will offer a wonderful return to live performances.’

The tenor is promoting a new album in the FT:

“Without diminishing us as Germans, there is a lack of competition coming from elsewhere,” he says. “Look back 30 years and the list of Italian singers was endless, but not now. The Germans have taken over where there were openings. I have discussed this with teachers in Italy, and it may be that young singers are being pushed too far, though that can’t be the only reason”.

The Austin Symphony Orchestra has dismissed Brenda Sansig Salas, its principal trombone, over remarks she made on social media in connection with the US urban riots. We understand she has also been dismissed by Austin Opera.

This was one of her blasts online:

Austin Symphony Orchestra tweeted soon after: We have been made aware that a musician of the Austin Symphony Orchestra has made an offensive post on their social media account regarding the protests across our country. This language is not reflective of who we are as an organization. The ASO is committed to being an inclusive organization as well as provide a safe space for all. We will follow up on the situation and take appropriate action.

Its executive director Anthony Corroa added: ‘We would like to thank the community and let you know that your voice was heard. As previously stated, we were made aware of offensive posts that were shared on social media by one of our musicians late last night. Once alerted, we were appalled by the comments as they are clearly not reflective of who we are as an organization. We began to work quickly and closely with the American Federation of Musicians, our Orchestra Committee, staff and other key members.

‘At this time we can state that the musician is no longer employed by the ASO for there is no place for hate within our organization. Thank you for your patience while we navigated through the necessary channels.’

UPDATE Brenda Sansig Salas joined the Austin Symphony in 2005 as second trombone, earning promotion to principal two years later. This was her picture on the orchestra’s website. It was taken down in the past few hours.

This was the scene last night outside a Steinway dealer in Philadelphia.

Ryan Bancroft, who is due to start as principal conductor of BBC National Orchestra of Wales in September, has just picked up a second job.

It’s artistic-in-association of the Tapiola Sinfonietta, in Espoo, Finland, starting a year from now. He will warm up as guest conductor during the coming season, when orchestras in Finland look likely to be a lot busier than those in Wales.
