Vienna’s Musikverein reopens for concerts

The venerable hall has posted this message:

We have fantastic news! 🥳🤩 🥳🤩 🥳🤩 🥳🤩
Since last Friday there is a glimmer of hope that it will be possible to play live music for a maximum of 100 concert visitors in June. We are currently working out the program for June and with a customized edition of our Musikvereinsfestivals to make the house ring out with music to the end of the season. 🎶🎵

      • Zubin Mehta has a special relationship with Vienna and the VPO and I ‘am sure that h’es very happy about this information. He talk about that in his autobiography. And for me Zubin is the soul of the Musikverein

        • To me the soul of Musikverein is either Bruckner or Brahms. But certainly not a dull conductor like Mehta (although he seems to be a gentle person).

          • I had the chance to see in concert Zubin with the VPO it was magic the relationship between him and the orchestra. And for me he s the best ever conductor of the new year concert.

  • I wonder how large-ensemble concerts in Wien that neither are public nor receive public support are going to make a profit, if they can only have 100 people in the audience. The only way I can see symphonic music happen and be profitable right now is with arrangements of symphonic works for smaller ensembles… and there isn’t enough interesting repertoire.

    • There’s tons of interesting repertoire, especially to fill one season, and there are also incredible arrangements by people like Ian Farringdon. Optimism, creativity, and a can-do spirit is going to be absolutely vital to get through this.

    • First it was 50 people at the venue. Now it is one hundred. In a few weeks time 200 or more will be allowed. One-step and a time, we will get back to having a full audience. But we need to take each step in turn.

    • Plenty of interesting repertoire, your RSO could benefit a lot from performing such brilliant works that are right up its alley.
During the fin-de-siécle a lot was written in Vienna for smaller groups that is absolutely brilliant music and remains underperformed and underrated

    • it was an instagram post and yes, they did… on the official website no emojis in the announcement 😉

  • In Austria, the social distancing measure is just 1m. It’s a lot easier to re-open for concerts with a 1m distance, than it is with the UK’s 2m.

    • With no more than 100 people in the Musikverein hall, maintaining 2 m — or more — between audience members will be no problem. Especially if members of the same household can sit together.

  • What fantastic news indeed, be one of the 100 lucky ones, and make your funeral arrangements when buying the ticket.

  • Im Wiener Konzerthaus spielt man im Juli immerhin schon vor 250 Zuhörern, die Wiener Symphoniker und Rudolf Buchbinder mit einem Beethoven – Programm
