The Slipped Disc daily comfort zone (74): Only Lenny dared to say it

Most people have mixed feelings, verging on Stockholm Syndrome, towards a captor. Bernstein came out with it: I Hate Music.

Phew; for a minute there I thought you’d written Stockhausen Syndrome.

  • Adam Stern says:

I’ve always had a soft spot for this early Bernstein work, set to his own texts (infinitely preferable, IMHO, to the cheesy and frequently embarrassing lyrics he wrote for the much later “Arias and Barcarolles”).

  • Fun and lovely piece. Just like “La bonne cuisine”, the other song-cycle by Lenny.

    We need more of this.

  • Meyer's Beer says:

Well, many folks know this work in a version by another Barbra https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8khVbNFbA0

  • Charles Clark-Maxwell says:

Genius stuff. Shame he ended up wanting to write “The great American whatever..” and put all that energy into “A Quiet Place”
