For those of who, like myself, can’t access the above clips (what a tease!), here is Gulda playing with Joel Zawinul the Brahms Haydn Variations, preceded by a remarkable introduction, apparently improvised. Say what you want about the introduction’s style, the playing is remarkable.

Thank you!
Just like how Friedrich Gulda always incites debate among classical music lovers, Herbie Hancock will always be one of the most revered and controversial figures in jazz. He is however THE jazz musician perfectly suited for the electronic age, having studied engineering and professing to love gadgets and buttons.

Simply amazing.
Try to find the record “Gulda at Birdland”; it’s been reissued a number of times on CD, some issues with more tracks than others.
It’s Gulda playing his own jazz tunes and some standards in a live club setting with a combo of some top NYC area jazz musicians.
All you COOL cats will dig it the most….
What was he wearing?
