  • Marc in Denver says:

Excuse me, but THIS is the original. Solo singer is Shirley Reeves. (Apparently it was recorded at 1:50)

Is there anything greater than the great “girl groups? “He’s a Rebel,” “Dancing in the Streets,” “And Then He Kissed Me,” “You Keep Me Hanging On,” etc. Sure, Goffin-King and others in the Brill Building created those songs, and Phil Spector brought them to life. But the singers!

    • PaulD says:

All good recordings that make me smile. But let’s not forget the session musicians, including Hal Blaine, whose wrong, but very right, opening drum beats helped make “Be My Baby” by the Ronnettes a hit.

      • Marc says:

Great point, Paul. And what a great record that was. We should also pay tribute to Specter’s Wall of Sound in “Da Doo Ron Ron” by the Crystals. Those were the days!

  • PaulD says:

While the song was co-written by Carol King, it was first recorded by the Shirelles in 1960.

  • Elizabeth Owen says:

Roberta every time! One of my Desert Island discs.
