The next music director of the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra Ostrava is to be, from September, the Russian Vassily Sinaisky.

‘Janáček Philharmonic is a very progressive orchestra and I am looking forward to performing many great programs together,’ he says.

There are two more appointments: the pianist Lukáš Vondráček will be artist in residence and Petr Popelka is Principal Guest Conductor.

superb conductor with the BBC Philharmonic, let us hope he can enthuse the orchestra about Bax’s TINGAGEL, the MOERAN symphony and the Elgar symphonies

  • Wurtfangler says:

He really is a superb conductor and a lovely man to boot. I don’t understand why he is not heading up a major orchestra when so many mediocre names are. Lucky Janáček Philharmonic.

    • Cornishman says:

Indeed. He’s often appeared with the CBSO also, and I always make sure to be there when he does. Seems to me to combine intellectual command of a score with a passionate desire to communicate – in a way that not many do.

  • chris says:

I don’t think this orchestra was ever Janacek’s orchestra. It was founded the year after his death!

  • Dimsky says:

Thoroughly enjoyed a Shostakovich under him here in Utah; a no nonsense, informed and compelling approach.

  • MacroV says:

He’s a terrific conductor, from what I’ve always understood. Never saw him when I lived in Moscow, but saw him once in Amsterdam.

I lived in Prague three years and I assume the Janacek Philhamonic came there to play, but if so it was pretty low-key. I’m sure they’re a fine orchestra; not everyone can get into the Czech Philharmonic.

  • Donald Hansen says:

Under its American conductor, Theodore Kuchar, the orchestra made many excellent recordings for Brilliant Classics and Naxos. His Nielsen Symphony box set is one of the best, and his Dvorak and Smetana box sets are pretty good too, just to name a few.

  • I have conducted them says:

The orchestra is very good when they want to be. They tour and record often.
