Two leading opera singers have published a vaguely-worded petition, asking Governments to act to keep the arts alive.

This is the nub of it:

Dear friends from all over Europe and the World, who share our musical brotherhood and appreciate the true value of what we bring every day to our society, know that your signature will be a fundamental support for the present and the future of the lyric world, but, beyond, to all the performing arts professions, now seriously threatened, whose activity so naturally permeates life, that everyone has even lost any consciousness of it. Support the artists, support an idea of Life that helps Life.

Jonas Kaufmann & Ludovic Tézier/Translation, Maria Prinz.

They want you to sign here.

In a couple of hours, they have 133 signatures.

A word salad, about as compelling as the ramblings of any overpaid diva/divo when asked to say a few words at a post-concert reception. And spare me about “the true value of what we bring every day to our society”, like they’re fucking ambulance drivers. The true value you bring to our society is 0, because almost none of “society” listens to you, cares about you, or hell, even knows about you. Again – get over yourselves! 133 signatures, or 13,333 – it literally doesn’t matter. No one cares, and no one will care. Period.

    • HugoPreuss says:

I don’t necessarily dispute the gist of what you say. But there are a lot of things that are not necessary for society. Wine and beer are certainly not necessary, but I’m damn happy that they exist.

Besides, if that’s how you feel about classical music: what are you doing here on a website devoted to something that “literally doesn’t matter”?

    • Waltraud Becker says:

No one wants to care about Your “wordsalad”…….

    • Clarrieu says:

Wow. Dear Covid-19, your rant sounds as healthy as your name…

  • Larry L. Lash / Vienna, Austria says:

As of 17:43 CET they have over 1.200 signatures, with the goal set at 1.500.

  • Frankster says:

It’s almost to the 1000 goal at 17.47 CET.

  • Waltraud Becker says:

    1325 after 5 hours…..

  • Bloom says:

A word salad, indeed. Can t they just ask for support and leave aside the bad taste grandiloquence ?

  • Jonas says:

Dear mostly white people with money from all over Europe and the World, who have for years sat on boards and paid our enormously inflated fees as a way of both ensuring and telegraphing your own access to high society, know that your signature will be a fundamental support for the present and the future of our continuing to receive those fees, but, beyond, to all the performing arts professions, now seriously threatened, who also I guess still have to be paid so that a system exists within which we can be paid much, much more. Support our bank accounts, support a world where we can swan around at Verbier and Gstaad without having to actually do a damn thing for poor, hungry or actually in need people – like other musicians! I mean, if we can still get rich, some of them will still get work, so.

    Literally.

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

Ah yes; once upon a time the Democratic people cared about those people for whom you advocate. Now THEY’RE the champagne sippers (see item on the lunch with Streep and Co.) The new elitist Left who wants them all to eat cake.

Apropos this article; yes, please help the ordinary people who are desperate and out of work.

  • Nini Cambou says:

Music and Opera transforms us- keep it alive, please!

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

Can we try to do BOTH? It was Jane Austen who wrote about people and their little privileges. Irony alert: the Left got rich and forgot about the poor.

  • LISERON says:

La musique et tous les genres de musique, c’est du SOLEIL dans nos vie !!!
Un jour sans soleil, c’est plutôt moche….
Voilà pourquoi il faut garder la musique vivante !!!

  • Per Cortesia!!! says:

Show up on the nights you are scheduled to sing. That should help a lot.

  • Jackyt says:

If you read their original message, available in many languages, there is far more to it than this summary suggests. The number of signatures is growing exponentially.

  • klavierBWV988 says:

Translated:under the guise of art, music millionaires ask for public money. And them, what they are willing to give up ?
