  • Barry Guerrero says:

Gott sei dank! Please get lots of rest, Placido.

  • Sandeling says:

    What a wonderful news.

  • Meal says:

Good to hear. I wish him and all COVID-19 infected people a speedy and full recovery!

  • Petros Linardos says:

    Great news.

  • feminist says:

Hopefully this has taught him to respect women equally.

    • George says:

Oh get off your high horse. This COVID-19 is not an act of God, punishing people for mistakes they’ve made.

    • Petros Linardos says:

      1. Don’t we all evolve from life’s most intense experiences, positive or negative?

      2. We can’t possibly know what Placido Domingo thinks, no matter what he says publicly. But we can safely assume that if he didn’t treat any women respectfully in recent months, we would have heard about it, especially in this space.

    • Bruce says:

“Hopefully this has taught him to respect women equally.”

      Why would it do that?

  • Peter says:

That’s good to know. Surely, surely even SD readers couldn’t wish anyone to get seriously ill with COVID-19.

    • Petros LInardos says:

I don’t know about unspoken covid-19 hopes, but I’ve seen no shortage of schadenfreude in SD blogposts and comments.

  • Ms.Melody says:

Who was it that said that prayers did not work?
That is wonderful news! Wishing maestro continuing recovery and good health to him and his family.

  • Kathleen King says:

One hopes Maestro Domingo continues to improve and eventually returns to full health. Sadly, we NEVER hear about an equally great failed “hero” who despite personal failings was recognized as a superlative contributor to the musical scene: Maestro James Levine. “Jimmy” quite literally built the modern Metropolitan Opera and its orchestra. Now his name and image has been chiseled off everything MetOpera produces. Both maestros are not perfect human beings, but they are GREAT musicians and deserve our concern in their ill health. I would like to hear how both fare now and in the future.

    • Yes Addison says:

I’m sure if Levine tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to a hospital, it would be newsworthy. We certainly heard granular detail on his health issues when he was the music director of the Met and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. At present, though, he no longer conducts anywhere, so his ‘baseline” health issues are those of a private citizen. If he doesn’t want to publicize them, only his family and friends will know about them.

I’m not sure what you mean about his name being chiseled off. There were video streams of four Met Wagner operas conducted by him just last week. I didn’t watch them, but I think I’d have heard if they had blurred out his face or shown a picture of the outside of the building during the overtures/preludes.

    • plinius says:

Levine did far worse than Domingo.

    • Larry D says:

Yes, in this difficult time when thousands are dying, we must prioritize our concern to focus on celebrities!

    • M2N2K says:

      To Kathleen King:
PD’s alleged behavior can be called “not perfect”, but JL’s was much worse than that.

      • Saxon Broken says:

Personally I think that Domingo was also the more important and greater artist; despite his sins, he was arguably the best tenor of his generation. Levine was no more than solidly competent.

        • M2N2K says:

This is largely a matter of taste, and it is hard to compare and rank artists who excelled in different professions. For me, during his best three decades JL was, if not quite one of the greats, certainly better than just “competent” as operatic conductor. During two decades while in his operatic prime, PD was in my opinion the finest dramatic tenor of his generation and probably one of all-time greats, but unfortunately he later chose to become a mediocre baritone and an even worse conductor, which deterioration sadly lasted longer than his aforementioned prime did.

  • Whimbrel says:

    Really pleased to hear this.

  • SMH says:

I’m so happy to hear this! All the best to maestro for a full recovery!

  • Verdian says:

Looking forward to his informed Nabucco in July!

  • CRogers says:

I wish PD a complete recovery. All the recent publicity concerning allegations is so contradictory and for me, lacking in credibility. Just what does it amount to? I wish him well and a resumption of contracts. Bravo Domingo.

  • Victoria says:

Wishing Placido a full recovery soon. Forza Maestro!

He posted a statement yesterday on his Facebook page.

    Dear friends,

a lot of confusing and incorrect information about my current health condition has been circulated in social networks and in the press.

I am at home and I feel fine.

Fortunately from the very first symptom I was, as usual, under medical supervision, given my age and my comorbidity, therefore the COVID19 infection was immediately suspected and this helped me a lot.

Now I continue my therapy and rest.

My thoughts right now are with those who suffer and with all those who are generously working to save lives.

I thank everyone for your affection and once again I recommend everyone to stay safe at home.

    See you soon.

    Plácido.

  • Madeleine Richardson says:

Excellent news but it now remains to be seen how many of the upcoming engagements will still go ahead given that so many opera houses are closed for the foreseeable future.
Even the Salzburg summer festival is in doubt with a decision being taken only on May 30 according to the website.
I’m also wondering if the Chorégies d’Orange summer festival, which had a fabulous programme this year, will go ahead.

  • Bruce says:

If he’s home from the hospital already then it must not have been a very serious case, thank goodness.

  • Ronnie Lamont says:

Get well soon maestro love your singing

  • Sonya Cole says:

    Wishing you a full recovery.
