The federal culture minister Monika Grütters has issued a statement saying she is aware of the burden placed on cultural institutions by the virus situation, and that individual artists are in ‘considerable distress’.

She added: ‘Artists and cultural institutions can rely on this, especially with regard to living situations and production conditions…: I won’t let them down! We have their concerns in mind and will work to ensure that the special interests of the cultural and creative sectors are included when it comes to support measures.’

I wonder if this only applies to German citizens/residents – or could it apply for anyone who was contracted by a German theatre/orchestra/venue but whose engagement(s) has been cancelled due to the temporary closure of the establishment?

I doubt we’d ever see anything days like this in the USA. Thousands of artists may lost their entire income and the less healthy (from a fiscal standpoint) organizations may fold.

We’ll see. I’ve got two events cancelled – no we’ll see if someone pays me for the money lost.

    • Incredulous says:

Why should anyone pay you anything? Support the artists and wipe that smug smirk off your wide mouth. Nobody cares if you have “two events cancelled” – you’d better just hope the institutions presenting them are there when this is over. Smug, arm-folding ignoramus.

The she, and I, and other freelance musicians care whether we are paid for months of lost work is the same reason a steelworker cares if he is laid off. We have families to feed. Our landlords want their rent. Bills are due. If you want to fling insults, stand in front of a mirror.
