The SWR Symphonieorchester, on a European tour with chief conductor Teodor Currentzis, have turned back at the Swiss border in hearing that they cannot perform in Lucerne for an audience of more than 1,000.

The SWR are heading on to Barcelona and Madrid.

The Italian conductor Daniele Callegari was told he could not enter Israel, where he was due to conduct Onegin in Tel Aviv.

The soprano Hila Baggio has been quarantined in Israel after giving a concert in Teatro della Pergola in Florence.

  • G says:

Bullshit, they didn’t have to turn back at the border. The orchestra was already informed on Friday, when the swiss government decided to cancel all events with more than 1000 people

    • norman lebrecht says:

That’s how the SWR described it in a Facebook post.

      • Djeedo says:

        But that is wrong!
I know some orchestra members, they have been informed a few days ago!

      • Andreas B. says:

        Their facebook post says:

“Eigentlich wären wir jetzt auf dem Weg nach Luzern… eigentlich.

Leider müssen wir uns den Anordnungen der Schweizer Behörden beugen …

Unsere Tournee geht nun also am Mittwoch weiter mit Konzerten in Spanien.”

        roughly translated:

‘Normally, we would be en route to Luzern right now…’
(i.e. in actual fact, we are not!)

‘Alas, we have to obey official swiss regulations

Therefore, our tour will continue on Wednesday with concerts in Spain.’

It seems to me they returned home from Vienna (their previous concert) and from Stuttgart they’ll go on to Spain – without detour to the swiss border.

      • Brettermeier says:

“That’s how the SWR described it in a Facebook post.”

Would you please include a link to that post? I couldn’t find on that mentioned them turning back at the border.

  • Andreas B. says:

    Who is “the Italian conductor”?

  • Gustavo says:

    Who’s the Italian conductor?

  • JohnB says:

The conductor who wasn’t allowed to enter Israel to conduct Eugene Onegin ist Daniele Callegari. He will be replaced by Israeli conductor Nimrod David Pfeffer.

  • Madeleine Richardson says:

That’s a pity. I heard Currentzis in Paris last October and his modern version of the classics had the packed theatre enthralled. Anyone who can possibly hear him and his young orchestra shouldn’t miss the opportunity.
