    Beautiful. Elegant. Classy.

Do you remember him at the Proms doing similar ?

Elegant! It is much different than Brussels Philharmonic with Deneve that played Beethoven 9th, just during this special friday night with some of the musicians dressing t-shirts with EU flag. Hey Chocolate Folks, it wasn’t a declaration of war or a bad omen. Hold your horses and lets hope everyone will get the best in future. Best wishes for future better decision for Brussels Philharmonic.

Your hubristic comment doesn’t deserve a reply on its (lack of) substance, but I’m afraid I can’t abstain and I must ask — just what exactly are “Chocolate Folks”? An insult? A popular culture reference? Some misguided joke that assumes that most musicians in that orchestra are Belgian citizens and somehow Belgium is *the* chocolate nation in the world (pace Switzerland, Italy, others)? Has anyone else ever referred to Belgians as “Chocolate Folks” (sic unciales litteræ)? Help.

      • Rgiarola says:

Dear Lewes, I’m glad you decided to reply. It’s allowed me to apologize for my choice of word that caused such a terrible impact. Please, believe me, that there isn’t any trace of cynicism and I tell you that I call my folks as “wine guys”, and the reason is that we produce proudly the best in the world. In fact, a colloquial language doesn’t work for writing purposes.
My biggest mistake was to mix arts with political issues. Rarely It works for the later. That’s the only thing I didn’t agree with Belgium Phil. attitude.
The good point is that from a democratical perspective, the orchestra could give us their opinion, as much me and you. We all have a chance to rephrase for a more constructive meaning. In the end, we all respect the majority desire.
On the other hand, you remind us that argumentum ad hominem is just a dialectic stratagem. Something we all need to avoid. I just have faith in San Jerónimo.
